Inheritance of “Phoceans” and “Massilia”, the vineyard quickly found adequate soils in our region.
Already, before the Romans and the conquests of Caesar, the peoples of the confederacies called “Celto-ligures” and notably that of “Albiques”, between the “Pays d’Aigues” and “Ventoux”, had learnt how to make wine and built wine tubs dug in the rock.

The vine culture in our region is known since the highest antiquity.
Phoceans, Romans succeeded one another, bringing mastery and development of the vineyard and leaving behind them numerous relics of civilization.
It is the time of the establishment of the big domains (“villae”), notably in "Bonnilis" (Bonnieux). It is also the birth of the "Via Domitia" which was used for the transport of Bonnieux's wines.

Bonnieux “Papal Earth” : on April 12, 1229 by the treaty of Paris, the Pope receives from the Count of Toulouse all the possessions beyond the Rhone, in eternity.

Bonnieux's enclave is a part of the legacy. But conflicts were born and it is only in 1274, under the influence of Pope Grégoire X, that Bonnieux become again Papal Earth. It will be so until 1791.

A 1324 note of the Apostolic Chamber defines the wine of " Bonnieux's Earth " as: " holding well in mouth and to the body without disturbing the Spirit ".
